Bullet train (or Shinkansen) rail system in Japan

The Bullet Train or Shinkansen is the high-speed railway system that connects all corners of Japan. Well, almost all corners ! Some parts of Japan do not have Shinkansen lines connecting them to the other parts of the country.

Itaya sensei, one of JOI's professional Japanese teachers, lives in Hokkaido, which is one area of Japan that does not have a Bullet Train line. But this is about to change …

The Bullet Train Comes to Hokkaido

This is was November 2nd the front page headline of the Hokkaido News newspaper that I subscribe to. I guess you'll all have no idea what its about. But for Hokkaido's citizens it is the first big step towards a dream coming true and it was huge news for us.

It is about the fact that the Shinkansen, the high-speed rail service that Japan is so proud of, unfortunately still does not go through Hokkaido, where I live. So if you want to travel to Honshu, the only way to get there is to either take an airplane or travel there by express train, which takes a long time. So for Hokkaido's citizens, the Bullet Train is a mode of transport that we yearn for. Everyone thinks that they would like to get onto a Shinkansen and travel down to Tokyo soon.

The Seikan Tunnel, which is the undersea tunnel that links Hokkaido to Honshu was completed in 1988, so the preparations to bring the Shinkansen to Hokkaido were made extremely long ago.

And so finally on November 1st a ceremony was held to connect the rails between the northernmost station in Honshu, Shin Aomori Station, to the southernmost station in Hokkaido, Shin Hakodate Hokuto Station, and so this means that the Bullet Train's rail line has now been connected from Kagoshima up to Hokkaido.

Now they are going to conduct a series of test runs and then the route between Shin Aomori and Shin Hakodate Hokuto Station is planned to be opened in March of 2016.

It is thought that this is going to make it easier for people to come to Hokkaido than before.

However, the Shinkansen is planning to be brought to Sapporo, where I live, in 2035. I will be an old woman by then. I have to live long !
