Green Tea in Japan

In England when we say, “I'd like a cuppa...” we mean a cup of black tea, with milk and or sugar added, but in Japan when someone says they'd like some tea, they usually mean a cup of green tea.

Green tea is the most popular hot drink in Japan and is used in ceremonies (especially the tea ceremony) and is commonly paired with Washoku Japanese cuisine.

The most well-known areas for growing tea are Kagoshima, Shizuoka and Uji. But in this Japanese learner's blog by Hachiyama sensei, a professional Japanese teacher at JOI, she refers to another famous area of tea cultivation.

Fans in tea fields ?

The other day I went to a city called Yame for work. When one thinks of Yame, one thinks about Yame tea. That day, the weather was nice, so we went to a place called Chuo Cha En. We climbed up to the top of a hill on the tea plantation, where there was an observation deck and from there we could see a completely green superb view , I was very moved. However, there were many large fan-like things there that looked imbalanced in the tea plantation... What on earth were they ?

I asked one of the locals, and I heard that they were fans to protect against frost. These frost protection fans are fans that are installed for the purpose of protecting farm products from damage done by frost, and are mainly used in tea fields and fruit orchards.

In order to cultivate delicious tea leaves, there are several necessary natural conditions, and these fans protect the tea leaves from the frost which they hate. Fans in the cold winter ? It would seem that this would make the tea leaves weaker and weaker, but actually these fans blow the warm air from the ground and ventilate the tea fields and apparently protect the new tea sprouts from freezing.

So in this way, the tea leaves are protected not only by human hands but also by these silent shadow heroes, and when I came to realize this, I felt a warm feeling. So ever since that day, every time I drink a cup of green tea, these giant fans have started to come to my mind.
