Autumn leaves in Japan

In Japan, the viewing of autumn leaves is known and Koyo. It is almost as popular as viewing cherry blossom leaves in the spring months.

There are many fantastic autumn leaves viewing spots all over the country. Since the practice has been popular for centuries, there are any number of forests and groves that were planted purposefully for this event.

Inamoto sensei is one of JOI's professional Japanese teachers, and in this short and easy-to-read blog for Japanese learners, she tells about one personal experience.

Autumn leaves viewing on a rainy day

Autumn leaves

Fireworks in autumn

The other day a foreign friend and I went autumn leaves viewing. But unfortunately, the weather forecast was rain. The day before the event, I received a mail from the friend. “It seems a bit strange to go autumn leaved viewing on a rainy day” I replied, “Sure, it would be more beautiful to view the leaves on a clear day, but the autumn leaves look tasteful on rainy days as well.”

On the day itself it was a little cold, and the rain fell and stopped on and off but there was some fog too, and the scenery was tasteful and beautiful. It was a little early so there were some trees that hadn't changed to red leaves as yet, the feeling of the mix of green and red was really wonderful.
