なにもしない、をする場所
By YOKOZUKA Noriko

Nakayama Basin, A Place to “Do Nothing”
What do you do when your days get a little too busy and you start to feel tired? This summer, I’ve been occasionally visiting a place called Nakayama Basin in Takayama Village, Gunma Prefecture.
It’s a quiet area surrounded by mountains. In the summer, the greenery is lush, and the air is cool and refreshing. When I visit, I spend my time simply listening to the sounds of birds and the wind—just quietly being there. And when I eat the summer vegetables grown in this area, I feel the fatigue melt away from within.
The Nakayama Basin is located along the “Japan Romantic Road,” a scenic route that stretches 320 kilometres from Ueda City in Nagano, through Kusatsu in Gunma, to Nikko in Tochigi. It was modelled after Germany’s Romantic Road.
Most people travel by car, but the roads around the Nakayama Basin have little traffic, so riding a motorcycle or bicycle also seems enjoyable. However, Asian black bears (tsukinowa guma) live in this area, and they may be active in the early morning or evening, so it’s important to be cautious during those times.
There are no major tourist attractions in the Nakayama Basin. But for me, it has become a special place—a place where I can simply do nothing.
This week’s key vocabulary
たまに – occasionally; once in a while

すーっと – smoothly; gently (すーっと疲れがぬける – fatigue melts away)
街道 – historic road; route
~にならって – following the example of ~; modeled after ~
ツキノワグマ – Asiatic black bear
Meet the Teacher
Japanese Language Teacher
After studying abroad in Beijing, I decided to become a Japanese teacher and have enjoyed spending time with many students in Japanese lessons. Currently, I am in charge of intermediate levels and above. In my lessons, my basic goal is to help students improve their vocabulary and syntax to acquire a wider and richer range of expression in Japanese, which will in turn help them refine their conversational skills.
My aim is to support Intermediate students to progress up to the advanced level, and from there, for those advanced students to progress up to a super advanced level! I look forward to welcoming everyone who likes to learn Japanese in a fun (but reliable) way. Let's enjoy learning together!
