Japanese river crab

Japanese river crab are usually served an appetizer in some Japanese restaurants. But in this language learner's blog, Someya sensei is not trying to eat these little crustaceans but to pet them !

Read this Japanese teacher's blog and watch the video for listening practice too.

Sawagani freshwater crab

About one month ago, some Sawagani came to our house. Sawagani are small crabs that live in the freshwater mountain brooks and streams.

We had bought some Sawagani that were sold for food in the fish section. They are really easy to breed, you have to take care to preserve the water and they can live relatively long.

The other day one of crabs carried some eggs in its belly. I did some research on spawning, incubation and hatching and prepared the environment as best as we could, then our family waited with bated breath. But then, I don't know what the reason was, but as the days passed, eggs were spawned from the mother crab's belly, but the hatching did not go well.

Sawagani freshwater crab when born are the same shape as their parents and if it had gone well, we would have seen tiny red crab babies. But this time unfortunately, but if we take great care in raising them, I think that one day we will be able to see some baby crabs.
