There are many seasonal goods and goods available for a limited time only on sale in Japan. Especially sweets and drinks. Some tourists to Japan really enjoy looking for some rare “only in Japan” souvenir goods to take home and can find them almost anywhere now. Convenience stores, supermarkets and various shops try to increase sales by making certain goods available for a limited time only.

For a limited time only

The other day, I went to the supermarket to buy some ice cream. When I got to the ice cream corner, every one of them looked delicious and I couldn't decide which one to buy when a certain phrase written on one popped up before my eyes. “Kikan Gentei”.(In English “For a limited time only”). I picked up that one without thinking and took it to the register.

In restaurants as well, I'm drawn to limited period food which uses seasonal ingredients. Deserts also entertain our eyes with their colorful decorations.

And its not only food, its the same with package tours. And also as Christmas draws near, many brands bring out cosmetic goods sets called “Christmas Kits” which are packaged up like treasure boxes and are fun just to look at.

So in this way, you can often see the phrase “Kikan Gentei” in Japan. It is said that Japanese people are susceptible to the words “Kikan Gentei”. I wonder why that is ? When I looked it up, there seems to be a lot of different stories to explain this but the psychology of getting hold of a rarity such as, “I can only get it now!” or “I've got to get it now!” is what seems to be working behind it.

How about you ?If you are shopping and there is a choice in front of you something that is available “For a limited time only” and something that is not, which one would you choose ? If you get a chance to come to Japan, then buying a “Kikan Gentei” souvenir might be a good idea !

I want to share with you the joy of that feeling you get when your "Wakaranai" (I don't understand) becomes "Wakaru" (I understand), and your "Wakaru" (I understand) becomes "Dekiru or Tsukaeru!" (I can use it !))... Looking forward to meeting you.
