The Japanese annual calendar is filled with many days that use Japanese number word-play.There are a number of ways to read Japanese Kanji - 'On yomi' and 'Kun yomi' and this allows for a variety of puns with dates. Iwaki sensei introduces Good Couple Day in this Japanese language blog to help you learn Japanese and understand these number puns.

good couple day

Good Couple Day

Have you heard of the phrase 'ii fuu fuu no hi' (Good Couple Day) ? 'Ii fuu fuu no hi' is one of the Japanese anniversaries and it falls on November 22nd every year. It was first proposed in 1988 and recently the number of people that hold wedding ceremonies and sign the marriege register on this day have increased.

The name is a play on words. November is the 11th month and the 22nd day – so 11 = 'ii' (good) and 22 = 'fuufu' (a married couple). The number 2 is usually read as 'ni' . But the numbers 1,2,3,4 can also be read as 'hii, fuu, mii, yo'

There are many anniversary days in November that are called 'Ii'-something Day. There's 'Ii Ishi no Hi' (Good Rock day), 'Ii Iro no Hi' (Beautiful Colour Day), 'Ii Furo no Hi' (Nice Bath Day), 'Ii Niku no Hi' (Good Meat Day) …. Can you work out what days they are on ?

By the way, my birthday which is on May 30th is 'Gomi zero no Hi' (No Garbage Day). Can you create a play on words for your birthday ?
