50 everyday Japanese abbreviations, including コンビニ, サブスク, アプリ, and 就活

How Japanese Words Get Shortened

Japanese speakers shorten words in several different ways. Some long loanwords become shorter, parts of two words can be combined, and longer kanji expressions can be reduced to just a few characters.

The 50 words on this page are shortened forms, but they do not necessarily sound casual. Many have become normal Japanese words and are naturally used in everyday conversation, workplaces, schools, shops, public information, and the media.

What does “everyday” mean here?

The words on this page are not limited to casual conversation. They can also appear naturally at work, at school, in shops, in public information, or in the media. However, natural does not always mean formal. In legal documents, official notices, or especially formal writing, a longer expression may still be preferred.

Japanese Abbreviations and Shortened Words FAQ

Are all Japanese abbreviations casual?

No. Many shortened words have become normal everyday vocabulary. コンビニ, パソコン, スマホ, プレゼン, and 健診, for example, are widely used without sounding like slang.

Can I use the abbreviations on this page at work?

In many cases, yes. These words are not especially casual and may appear naturally in workplace conversation, internal communication, public information, or the media. However, formal contracts, legal documents, or highly formal writing may still use the longer expression.

What is コンビニ (konbini) short for?

コンビニ is short for コンビニエンスストア, meaning “convenience store.” In ordinary Japanese, the shorter form is much more natural.

What is パソコン (pasokon) short for?

パソコン comes from パーソナルコンピューター (“personal computer”). Japanese combines shortened parts of the two words.

What about abbreviations such as スクショ, リスケ, and モチベ?

Those words are more conversational. They are useful for understanding real Japanese, chats, and social media, but some may be too casual for clients, formal emails, or business documents. See our guide to 30 Casual Japanese Abbreviations.
