Japanese carving characters

The other day, I put up a display of carving characters in an exhibition known as the Japan Carving Characters Exhibition. This was the first time for me.

The history of carving characters is long, and if one was to investigate it thoroughly, one would find that it goes back to almost 4000 years ago.

The display I put up was in a style known as “Modern carving characters”, so the character that I had written were copied onto a block of wood, carved out, painted and finally had some gold foil pasted onto it. It is really interesting because the characters that I had written out onto paper, eventually became three dimensional.

My teacher and the veteran  members created much larger carving characters. There are people who make doorplates or welcome signboards for wedding ceremonies.

Carving characters are rarely given much attention, but they are very interesting .
