Sushi in Japan

Sushi was first eaten in Southeast Asia along the area around the Mekong River. The person credited with 'inventing' the modern Japanese style sushi which is popular today was was a chef named Hanaya Yohei.

Sushi is popular all over Japan, and there are many types of sushi bars ranging from the super-expensive to the reasonably priced Kaiten-Sushi places which are also called conveyor-belt sushi in English.

皆さんは寿司を食べるときは、どこで食べますか。我が家 では、寿司はもっぱら回転寿司で食べます。手頃な値段 で食べられて、ラーメンやうどん、デザートなど、寿司以外のメニューも豊富な回転寿司は、大人も子供も楽しむことができます。

先日近所にできた新しい回転寿司の店に食べに行ってみて、びっくりました。よく行っている回転寿司店は、回転レーンの上をお寿司が回っていて、好きなお寿司を選んで取るシステムですが、この店では、回転レーンがありません。寿司はレーンの上を回っていないのです。客が食べたいものをタッチパネルで注文すると、注文したものが新幹線の形をした高速レーンに乗せられて、席まで直接運ばれてきます。猛スピード で運ばれてきた寿司が自分の席の前でピタッと止まった ら、そこから皿ごと取って食べるのです。

このシステムだと、自分の食べたい寿司が流れてくるまで待たなくてもよく、また、常に新鮮な寿司が食べられます。合理的 だなあと感心しましたが、「次は何が回ってくるかな」というワクワク感 はありませんでした。

このシステムだと、自分(じぶん)の食(た)べたい寿司(すし)が流(なが)れてくるまで待(ま)たなくてもよく、また、常(つね)に新鮮(しんせん)な寿司(すし)が食(た)べられます。合理的(ごうりてき) だなあと感心(かんしん)しましたが、「次(つぎ)は何(なに)が回(まわ)ってくるかな」というワクワク感(かん) はありませんでした。

Where do you usually eat when you eat sushi ? My family eats sushi exclusively at kaiten-zushi ("conveyor belt" sushi bars). The prices are reasonable and there's a large variety of other menu dishes like ramen or udon, deserts and the like so kids and adults can all enjoy eating there.

The other day, we were surprised when we went to eat out at newly opened sushi place in our neighborhood. At the kaiten-zushi place that we usually go to, the sushi is revolving around on top of a conveyor belt, and the system is designed so that you can pick out the sushi that you like, but this sushi bar had no moving conveyor belt. And the sushi was not revolving around. The customer picks the sushi that they want to eat on a touch panel, and the ordered sushi comes out along fast moving belt on top of a Bullet Train shaped tray, and comes directly to your seat. The sushi comes at high-speed straight to your seat and stops suddenly at your table, and you pick up that plate and eat your sushi.

With this system, you don't have to wait for the sushi you like to come revolving around, and on top of that you can freshly made sushi as well. It was rational, and I really admired it, but that exciting feeling of “I wonder what's going to come around next” was missing.
