Hina Matsuri

Hina Matsuri (or Girls' day or Doll's festival) is a celebration of the daughters of a house which falls on March 3rd in the Japanese cultural calendar.

There are many traditions surrounding the festival including special types of food and drinks and some superstitions or beliefs that vary from area to area around Japan. But the most well-known point of the season is the decoration of dolls within the house.

Collecting dolls is also a national pastime with some renown collectors and collections displaying priceless dolls that can be found in museums and private homes around the country.

Ueno sensei lives in Tokyo with her husband and daughter and she has continued the family tradition of collecting Hina dolls in her home.

This blog features some wonderful pictures and an audio reading to help you learn Japanese for free and improve your Japanese language listening and reading.

Girls' day dolls

In our house we have 5 pairs of Hina dolls. These figures make their presence felt within the house's closet. Bringing them all out every year is quite an ordeal, and as Hina Matsuri Day (Doll's festival) draws nearer every year, we always rush to take them out.

But every year I also feel sorry for them as they spend most of the year inside a dark closet. So this year, as soon as the Setsubun Day (Bean Throwing Ceremony) was over, we took them out.

The 1st pair These Hina dolls were bought for me by my maternal grandmother. Their “charm points” are their well-proportioned faces and their gorgeous costumes. When we were young, my younger brother and I often touched and played with them which is probably why they look slightly tired.

The 2nd pair These Hina dolls were bought for me by my paternal grandmother. Their “charm points” are their puffy cheeks and their unaffected expressions. These types of dolls are known as 'Kimekomi ningyo' (meaning wooden dolls with Japanese costumes made from cloth with the edges tucked into grooves in the wood).

The 3rd pair These Hina dolls were bought my husband's mother and my mother for my daughter. Their “charm points” are their in vogue style faces. My daughter's morning routine involves checking whether these two have eaten their Hina Arare offerings ( sweetened rice-flour cakes for offering at the Dolls' Festival).

The 4th pair These palm-sized Hina dolls were given to us by my cousin. Their “charm points” are their puckered-up button mouths.

The 5th pair These Hina dolls were made by daughter last year at kindergarten. Their “charm points” are the emperor doll's manly eyebrows and the empress doll's sweet smile.

There...I've introduced them all now. Do you have a favorite doll pair among them ?
