Confucianism in Japan

Confucianism stands beside Buddhism as one of the religious, sociological, and philosophical teachings that spread across Asia to Japan. Whereas Buddhism had its roots in India, Confucianism was born in China.

In Japan, it was introduced as a fundamental component to the education system and became a staple in schools during the Edo period.

In this blog by Japanese teacher Kazumitsu Yamamoto, he gives an introduction to the vital cultural work and also gives us his personal take on the text’s importance.

Rongo, The Analects of Confucius

Do you know Confucius who was (from 552BC to 479BC)? He was a Chinese thinker and educator from approximately 2500 years ago.

The words and deeds of Confucius were recorded in a book called “Rongo or the Analects of Confucius”. There is an English translation available as well.

The lessons written in the “Rongo” book include the importance of ‘Jin’ or a thoughtful heart, the joys of learning, and that it is important to self-reflect, among other things. In other words, 'how to live life', is written out in an easy to understand way.

“Rongo” has been and is still well-loved by many Japanese people. Especially during the Edo period, it was used as a textbook for young people and children who will be responsible for the future, in clan schools (Hanko) and temple schools (Terakoya) in Sodoku (reading aloud) classes. “Rongo” is not a difficult text at all. For example, the Japanese transcription reads: “manabite toki ni kore wo narau. Mata yorobashi kara zuya”. Which in the modern translation means: “Keep learning and always review what you have learned. And a wonderful feeling arises in the heart does it not?” It is full of things that become the basis for people’s hearts. I think one can say that “Rongo” is one of the foundations of the beautiful mental and spiritual world of Japan.

I love this “Rongo” and when I feel down, I read it aloud and gain energy. Why don’t you try reading “Rongo” out loud once?
