Coffee in Japan

Did you know that Japan is the 4th ranking country in coffee consumption? There are coffee shops and cafes everywhere and also vending machines selling coffee in cans.

Recently, convenience stores also serve freshly ground coffee for a very reasonable price as well. In this blog for Japanese learners by Japanese teacher Yukiko Takane, she looks into the different ways that the word for coffee is written in Japanese. And also the different impressions that these different ways of writing can give.

The blog is a useful way to practice for the JLPT tests. You can practice reading, learn new vocabulary and Kanji as well as listening too.

コーヒーの漢字

The Japanese Kanji for Coffee

Cafes and coffee stands have increased and you are now able to drink delicious coffee cheaply in supermarkets and convenience stores.

Signs with the Katakana 「コーヒー」or English 「coffee」are quite standard but have you seen signs with the Kanji 「珈琲」 on them too? Coffee is represented by the Kanji 「珈琲」. Does the impression it makes change between different signs? This is my arbitrary impression but.... The English 「coffee」 gives me an impression of something you drink at a trendy cafe with lots of cream. (One day I'd like to go to one and say “I'd like a frappuccino [of some sort] please.”)

But the Kanji 「珈琲」 gives me the impression of a cup brewed slowly by a master that has years of experience grinding coffee beans.

I looked up the origin of the Kanji for coffee. Coffee was brought to Japan by the Dutch during the Edo period. It was black and had a distinct flavor and was a drink that Japanese people found difficult to get to used to. So they created a Kanji for the drink to make it popular nationally. The Kanji character 「珈」 means a flower ornament. And the Kanji character 「琲」 refers to the string that connects the ornamental ball to the flower ornament. So it means a flower ornament that is connected to an ornamental ball. So it is a drink that has a Kanji of a hair ornament. The image came from the coffee berry before harvesting. It's kind of fashionable isn't it.

By learning a little about the history, I could feel the profoundness of coffee or 「珈琲」. What impression, image or what aroma do you imagine from the Kanji 「珈琲」?

takane

Hajimemashite, I am Yukiko Takane.
I live in Chiba Prefecture. My hometown is near the ocean and is surrounded by rice fields - its a laid-back place. The sashimi and rice is really good here. My family home makes rice as well, so I usually help out during the harvest season. I may look weak, but actually I can lift a 30kg bag of rice.

In the past, I taught Japanese in Saipan and Cebu islands. The people I got to know there are precious to me. I am really looking forward to meeting you all in the online classrooms. I have been called 'Takani' Sensei or 'Okane' sensei by my students. Well, I am not a 'crab' nor am I 'money' - the name is Takane. Doozo yoroshiku onegaishimasu.

Try to use your newly learned vocabulary and phrases all the time in the lessons. Looking forward to meeting you all in class !
