The Tanabata Star Festival: A Beloved Cultural Celebration in Japan

The Tanabata Star Festival is one of the most loved celebrations and cultural days in the Japanese calendar. The origin of the festival comes from a Chinese folk tale and there are many renditions of the story in Manga, Anime, and live-action films.

Read this blog in Japanese to learn more vocabulary and prepare yourself for the JLPT reading section. Also use the English translation and YouTube listening to improve your Japanese skills.

tanabata-2023

Tanabata Star Festival

Tanabata is an event on 7 July where people write their wishes on narrow strips of five-colored paper called 'Tanzaku' and hang them on a tree called 'Sasa' (bamboo branch) to make a wish to the stars.

This event became popular in the Edo period when children wrote their wishes on 'Tanzaku' to become better readers and writers. Nowadays, adults and children alike write various wishes on bamboo branches at convenience stores and train stations and make requests to the stars.

It is fun to read what other people have written. In addition to the strips of paper, they also attach various decorations to the bamboo branches, which are very beautiful. The decorations swaying in the wind make the hot summer days feel cooler.

Why not write down your wishes and make a wish on a star on 7 July?
