What kind of year will 2026 be?

Happy New Year.

In Japan, every December we choose a kanji character that symbolizes the year, called “Kanji of the Year.” Do you know what the kanji for 2025 was? The answer was “bear.” In 2025, there were many news stories about bears coming down from the mountains into towns where people live and attacking people. It became a year that made us think about changes in the natural environment.

What kind of year was 2025 for you? If you expressed it with one kanji, what would it be? If you studied hard, it might be “study.” If you focused on your health, it might be “health.” For me, it was a year of trying many new things, so I think my kanji would be “challenge.”

So, what kind of year will 2026 be? How about choosing one kanji at the beginning of the year to represent what you want to aim for?

Thank you for your continued support of JOI this year as well.

This week’s key vocabulary
