Japanese Conversation Lessons – From Beginner to Advanced

 

At Japonin(JOI), we offer Japanese conversation classes based on the internationally recognized language learning standard, CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), allowing learners to efficiently work toward specific goals.

Our experienced instructors use original materials based on CEFR to help learners acquire communication skills that are valuable in both everyday life and business settings.

Beginner 1

【CEFR A1】

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

* All lessons have English alphabet support at the Beginner1 level.

 

Beginner 2

【CEFR A2】

Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

* There are no English alphabet support readings, only Hiragana and Katakana readings from the Beginner 2 level.

 

Low Intermediate

【CEFR B1】

Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

 

Intermediate

【CEFR B2】

Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

 

Advanced

【CEFR C1】 【CEFR C2】

【C1】Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

【C2】Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.

Our grammar classes provide a systematic approach to learning Japanese grammar, with tailored curricula for all levels, from beginners to advanced learners.

Additionally, these classes are ideal for those aiming to pass the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test). Beginner 2 Grammar (incl. JLPT N4)

【JLPT N4】

This FlexLesson level focuses on Japanese grammar at the beginner 2 level, including the grammar forms covered on the JLPT N4 test.

You'll also improve your Kanji and vocabulary skills through this course. This level is recommended for all beginner 2 students, even if you do not plan to take the JLPT.

Of course with all classes at Japonin(JOI), you get to speak and use the grammar in situational role plays and conversations.

We recommend you take this level and the conversation-focused Beginner 2 level at the same time. You can freely mix and match the FlexLesson class types as your schedule allows. For more details, see our JLPT N4 online lessons.

JLPT N4 Kanji and Vocabulary

If you can read a few kanji but haven't written many, or if you want to learn JLPT N4 kanji and vocabulary, let's start studying kanji together.

In this class, we will practice by writing blank strokes, using an animation of the stroke order.
Once you have a rough idea of the stroke order, you can practice by actually writing them on paper.
Words using each kanji will also be introduced, so you can study vocabulary as well.

No textbook is required for the class.
Once your reservation is confirmed, we will send you a "practice sheet" to use in class.
If possible, please print out the sheet and join the class. If printing is difficult, please prepare your own notebook.

FlexLesson for students who are stepping up from beginning-level Japanese, or for students who plan to take the JLPT N3 test.

If you have completed a beginning course in Japanese, this course can help you make strong progress toward intermediate. The goal is to understand fairly well Japanese used in everyday situations and learn the Japanese vocabulary, expressions, and grammar you'll need to advance to the intermediate level.

This course covers about 700 of the 1,000 essential kanji needed for the JLPT N2 level, excluding the 300 basic characters from N5 and N4. Each lesson focuses on 10–15 characters.
In Japanese learning, studying kanji also means expanding your vocabulary. You’ll build word associations from each character and learn natural collocations to grow your word power.
Anyone who has completed beginner-level kanji study is welcome to join. Deepen your knowledge of kanji and enjoy learning new characters with us!

Tensaku is our writing review and correction service. A variety of tensaku topics are published every month at several skill levels. You can choose one of the topics and practice writing your Japanese in an essay.

How to use the Tensaku service

  • You choose a topic, write your Japanese text, and submit it to us via the reservation system.
  • A professional Japonin(JOI) Japanese teacher will review and correct your submitted text.
  • You'll receive a corrected document, detailing suggestions for wording, grammar, and usage changes.

Writing is an effective add-on to the Japanese language instruction presented in classes at Japonin(JOI).
By bringing together your knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, kana and kanji, the challenge of writing in Japanese puts your language skill to the test and vastly improves Japanese learning.

Is English support available in the lessons?
Lessons are primarily conducted in Japanese, but English support is provided for Beginner 1 to Pre-Intermediate level materials. In Beginner 1, romaji support is also available.
Do I need to purchase textbooks?
No. The teacher will provide original materials.
How can I choose the right level for me?
Please check the descriptions for each level, and if you are unsure, feel free to contact our support team. Let us know your current learning status and goals, and our staff will recommend the most suitable level for you.
Can I take multiple lessons?
