The Precision of the Shinkansen

Recently, I saw a Shinkansen at Tokyo Station. It passed quietly through the platform and had a special presence.

I had heard that Japan’s Shinkansen is fast, safe, and extremely precise when it comes to time. When I learned why the Shinkansen is almost never late, I was even more surprised. The drivers rely not only on digital equipment but also look at a pocket watch and adjust their speed down to a matter of seconds. They check the time with their own eyes and calculate as they drive, thinking things like, “We’ll arrive at the station in five seconds,” or, “Let’s make up these five seconds by the next station.”

There is another important part of the story. Late at night, when the Shinkansen is no longer running, people are still working to make sure the rails are safe. Using heavy machinery, they inspect the rails one by one and help ensure that the trains can run safely again the next day.

The Shinkansen is a symbol of high technology, but its precision and safety are supported by human skill and careful, dedicated work. Digital and analog, people and machines. I felt that this kind of balance is something important that can be applied to many different areas of life.
