A warm-toned globe representing changes in cultural differences around the world.

Tokyo Tower

I visited Tokyo Tower for the first time since my elementary school field trip. It’s one of the most famous landmarks in Japan. To be honest, I thought, “I already know this place, so maybe it won’t feel very fresh.” But once I actually went, Tokyo Tower against the surrounding scenery looked surprisingly beautiful.

Nearby is Zōjōji Temple, which has a 600-year history. The autumn leaves in the surrounding parks were gorgeous, and the main streets were lively with people. Even so, there was a quiet atmosphere around Tokyo Tower itself, and I felt a mysterious balance between bustle and calm.

Tokyo Tower was completed in 1958, so it now has over 67 years of history. It has stood as a historical structure watching over Tokyo in the postwar era, and it has become one of Japan’s most iconic symbols.

Tokyo Tower often appears in movies and TV dramas as well. For example, Godzilla has destroyed it, and monsters in Ultraman have knocked it down. It has also appeared in family dramas and romance films, portrayed as a building that represents Japan.

This visit reminded me of how charming Tokyo Tower really is. It is more than just a tourist spot, and it is a special place filled with history, culture, and countless personal memories.
