Japanese wind chimes

日本の夏は、暑いです。 毎日４０度以上ある、暑い国から来た人達も、「日本の夏は暑い。」と言います。 日本は湿度が高く、蒸し暑いからだそうです。 そんな日本では、昔から、少しでも暑い夏を涼しく過ごすために、いろいろな工夫がされています。「風鈴」もそのひとつです。

みなさんは、「風鈴」を見たことがありますか。 「風鈴」は金属、陶器、ガラスでできた、手のひらに乗るくらいの小さな鐘のような形をして、内側に「舌」という小さな部品がついています。 その「舌」には、ひもで短冊がつけられています。 家の軒下などに吊り下げて、短冊が風にゆれて、音が鳴るしくみになっています。

その音色は、秋を知らせる鈴虫の声と似ている、と言われます。 冷房のなかった時代、人々は、日本の暑い夏をやり過ごすため、この涼しげな音を聞いていました。 今では、夏の風物詩のひとつになっています。

みなさんの国では、暑い夏を涼しく過ごすために、どんなものがありますか。

日本にほんの夏なつは、暑あついです。 毎日まいにち４０度ど以上いじょうある、暑あつい国くにから来きた人達ひとたちも、「日本にほんの夏なつは暑あつい。」と言いいます。 日本にほんは湿度しつどが高たかく、蒸むし暑あついからだそうです。 そんな日本にほんでは、昔むかしから、少すこしでも暑あつい夏なつを涼すずしく過すごすために、いろいろな工夫くふうがされています。 「風鈴ふうりん」もそのひとつです。

みなさんは、「風鈴ふうりん」を見みたことがありますか。 「風鈴ふうりん」は金属きんぞく、陶器とうき、ガラスでできた、手てのひらに乗のるくらいの小ちいさな鐘かねのような形かたちをして、内側うちがわに「舌ぜつ」という小ちいさな部品ぶひんがついています。 その「舌ぜつ」には、ひもで短冊たんざくがつけられています。 家いえの軒下のきしたなどに吊つり下さげて、短冊たんざくが風かぜにゆれて、音おとが鳴なるしくみになっています。

その音色ねいろは、秋あきを知しらせる鈴虫すずむしの声こえと似にている、と言いわれます。 冷房れいぼうのなかった時代じだい、人々ひとびとは、日本にほんの暑あつい夏なつをやり過すごすため、この涼すずしげな音おとを聞きいていました。今いまでは、夏なつの風物詩ふうぶつしのひとつになっています。

Japanese wind chimes

Japan's summer is hot. Even people from countries where the temperatures get over 40 degrees Celsius say,”Japan's summer is hot” when they come to visit the country. I think it is because the humidity is high and it is really muggy. Because Japan is like this, we have developed various devices from long ago to help spend the summer in a cool manner. One of these devices is a 'Fuu Rin' or Japanese wind chime.

Have you ever seen a 'Fuu Rin' ? It is usually shaped like a small bell, is about the size of your palm and made from metal or clay or glass, and on the inside a small part called a 'Zetsu' is connected to it. And there is an oblong card called a 'Tan Zaku' tied to this 'Zetsu'. It is hung under the eaves of the house or a similar place, and when the 'Tan Zaku' is shaken by the wind, it is designed to make a sound.

The tone of the sound is said to sound like a bell cricket which is an insect that sings to announce that autumn is coming. In the days before air conditioners, people used to listen to these soothing, cool-sounding sounds to help them get through the hot Japanese summer months. Nowadays, 'Fuu Rin' have become one of the seasonal reminders of Japan.
