What Kind of Autumn Is Yours? — Japan’s “Autumn of ___”

Japan has four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. When autumn arrives, the summer heat gradually fades, and the weather becomes more comfortable. The leaves turn red and yellow, and shops begin to display many delicious seasonal foods.

In Japan, people often use the expression “Autumn of ___” to describe different ways of enjoying the season.

First, there is shokuyoku no aki, or “autumn of appetite.” Many foods, including rice, vegetables, fruit, and fish, are in season during autumn. We can enjoy seasonal flavors such as newly harvested rice, chestnuts, sweet potatoes, Pacific saury, mushrooms, persimmons, and grapes. Shokuyoku means the desire or appetite to eat.

Autumn is also a perfect time to relax and read, so there is another expression: dokusho no aki, or “autumn of reading.” I make a list of the books I want to read and read them one by one. The cool, comfortable autumn weather is ideal for enjoying a good book.

Because autumn is neither too hot nor too cold, it is also a good season for physical activities such as walking, hiking, and jogging. For this reason, it is called supōtsu no aki, or “autumn of sports.”

Many schools hold an athletic meet in autumn, and Japan also celebrates the national holiday called Sports Day in October.

There is also geijutsu no aki, or “autumn of the arts.” During this season, people visit museums and exhibitions, listen to music, paint pictures, and enjoy other creative activities.

For me, autumn is the “autumn of appetite.” I especially love chestnuts, and autumn always makes me want to eat Mont Blanc, a chestnut cake. I also enjoy walking while looking at the beautiful autumn leaves.

What kind of autumn is it for you? Perhaps it is an “autumn of travel,” an “autumn of study,” or an “autumn of movies.” Try creating your own “Autumn of ___” expression!

While working at an IT company, I had the opportunity to take part in a business training program in Hawaii for several months. During that time, I learned not only from the training itself, but also through the support and interactions I had with people from different cultural backgrounds. It was a very valuable experience for me.After returning to Japan, I wanted to use what I had learned to support others, especially children and international students. Since then, I have been involved in educational settings and have provided support in my own way.

After completing a Japanese Language Teacher Training Course, I will start teaching Survival Japanese online lessons and beginner courses at Japonin in 2026.

My hobbies are listening to music, watching movies, cooking, and playing the piano. I look forward to meeting you in my lessons.
