A message of support

From January to February, Japan enters exam season. Students heading to their test sites may feel anxious and tense, wondering whether they can show the results of all their hard work, as they ride unfamiliar trains to the venue.

Around this time of year, you sometimes see encouraging messages at train stations.

The one I saw was a handwritten note on a board placed right after the ticket gates: “Good luck, exam takers! We’re cheering for all of you.”

Even though there isn’t an exam taker in my family, it somehow made my chest feel warm. Maybe it reminded me of my own past, and also made me want to support young people who are doing their best.

Above all, the fact that it was handwritten—not digital—made it even more moving.

This week’s key vocabulary
