Christmas in Japan

Japan is a primarily Buddhist and Shinto nation, but this does not stop the population from celebrating Christmas.
But Japanese Christmas is a little different.

Work Day not a Holiday
First of all, the day is a normal work day. So the stores and companies are open as usual.
For companies, this season is the build-up to the end of the year, so there are many extremely busy people in the cities.

Christmas Eve
The most celebrated day during the Christmas season is Christmas Eve in Japan.
It is a day for couples that is second only to Valentine's Day.

Many TV dramas and Japanese movies feature a Christmas scene that typically involves a romantic meeting in a brightly decorated town center.

Christmas Decorations
Recently, some houses in the suburbs with small children have taken to decorating their houses with Christmas lights.
It is a fluctuating trend that sees its popularity increase and decrease every year.
In my neighborhood this year, the decorations in some houses are incredible but the houses that did big decorations last year are subdued this year.

Christmas Markets
In many major cities now, Christmas Markets have become a big draw for shoppers, couples, and families.
Many markets have picked up the German tradition of Gluhwein (spiced warm red wine) and these stalls are very popular.
