Regional festivals and dances in Japan
There are many dances and festivals all over Japan, especially during the summer season. Each local area has famous dances, for example, there is the famous Awa Odori in Tokushima prefecture in Shikoku among many others.
Kitano sensei, one of the professional Japanese teachers at JOI, lives in Sweden, but she was raised in Hokkaido in Japan. In her hometown, there is an amusing dance that is quite popular.

皆さんは、踊りが好きですか。 私の地元に「イカ踊り」と呼ばれる踊りがあります。 私の地元は北海道の函館市という町で、昔からイカ釣り漁が盛んです。 そのため、たくさんイカを使った料理があり、市民にイカはとても親しまれています。
この「イカ踊り」は、そのイカ料理を表現した踊りです。 私は、小学生の時に学校で習ったのですが、函館市民であれば、ほとんど誰でも踊れる踊りです。 毎年夏にお祭りがあり、その時に、この踊りを踊りながら、大勢の人々でパレードをします。
バカバカしい踊りに感じますが、皆で踊っていると楽しいし、ストレス発散にもなります。 興味があれば、「イカ踊り」をYoutube等で見てみてください。 皆さんの国にも、楽しい踊りはありますか？

イカ踊（おど)り
皆（みな）さんは、踊(おど)りが好(す)きですか。 私(わたし)の地元(じもと)に「イカ踊(おど)り」と呼(よ)ばれる踊(おど)りがあります。 私(わたし)の地元(じもと)は北海道(ほっかいどう)の函館市(はこだてし)という町(まち)で、昔（むかし）からイカ釣(つ)り漁(りょう)が盛(さか)んです。 そのため、たくさんイカを使（つか）った料理(りょうり)があり、市民(しみん)にイカはとても親(した)しまれています。
この「イカ踊(おど)り」は、そのイカ料理(りょうり)を表現(ひょうげん)した踊(おど)りです。 私(わたし)は、小学生(しょうがくせい)の時(とき)に学校(がっこう)で習(なら)ったのですが、函館（はこだて）市民(しみん)であれば、ほとんど誰(だれ)でも踊(おど)れる踊(おど)りです。 毎年(まいとし)夏（なつ）にお祭(まつ)りがあり、その時（とき）に、この踊（おど）りを踊（おど）りながら、大勢（おおぜい）の人々（ひとびと）でパレードをします。

Hakodate squid dance ika odori
Do you like to dance ? In my hometown there is a dance called the ika odori ( squid dance ) . My hometown is a town in Hokkaido called Hakodate, and from long ago it became prosperous due to its squid fishing. For this reason, there are a lot of cuisine there that use squid as an ingredient, and squid is very popular among the citizens.
This Hakodate squid dance (ika odori), expresses this cuisine through dance. We all learned it when we were in Elementary school, and nearly all Hakodate citizens know how to dance it. Every summer, we have a festival and at that time huge numbers of people have a parade while all doing this dance.
It feels really silly, but its fun to dance with everyone, and its a good way to release stress. If you are interested in it, please look up “Ika Odori” on YouTube. Do you have any fun dances in your country ?
