Bread in Japan

Bread first arrived in Japan with the Portuguese in the 16th Century. After that Japan became closed to trade for 400 years, until the end of the Edo period, so it was not until the last few centuries that bread eating became popular in Japan.

There are many bakeries all over Japan and many types of bread that are unique to Japan. In this blog for Japanese learners, Japanese teacher Kaori Ishibashi introduces one such type of bread.

Read the blog and learn new Japanese vocabulary and study Kanji, Ishibashi sensei also reads out the blog, so you can practice your Japanese listening.

melon-pan

Lovely melon buns

What kind of bread do you like? I love melon buns. Have you ever eaten melon bread?

Melon bread was first created in Japan. It is baked bread with sweet biscuit dough on top. It does not taste like melon, but it looks like a melon, hence the name “Melon Pan”. Recently, melon-flavoured melon bread is also available, as the name suggests. Melon bread is so popular in Japan that there are even shops specializing in melon bread.

In addition to Melon Pan, there are many other delicious sweet breads in Japan. One bread that has always been popular is anpan (bean-jam bun). The bread is filled with anko (sweet bean paste). There are also cream buns with cream inside and jam buns with jam inside. Yakisoba bread with yakisoba noodles and curry bread with curry are popular among young people.

When you come to Japan, please try not only melon bread but also a variety of other delicious sweet breads.

ishibashi

Hajimemashite, my name is Kaori Ishibashi.
I live in Ibaraki city, in Osaka prefecture, with my husband, son and daughter. Ibaraki city is in between Osaka and Kyoto and is in a very convenient location. Before I was married, I went to Canada and Spain as an exchange student. So I too love to study languages.
Since my children are still so young, I cannot readily go abroad, so I am really glad of the opportunity to communicate with people from various countries through JOI. Let's study Japanese together.
