Japan’s Ekiben culture

At Japanese train stations, you can find lunch boxes on sale which are meant to be eaten during your train journey.

Some train stations have become famous for their ekiben lunch boxes which are made from local specialties.

In this blog by a Japanese teacher at JOI, Miki Oosawa, you can read about her memory of one special and nostalgic Ekiben lunchbox.

You can also learn new Kanji and Japanese vocabulary by reading the different versions and also listen to Oosawa sensei reading the blog out loud.

Nostalgic Kamameshi

Nostalgic Kamameshi

Ekiben (travel lunchboxes) are sold at station kiosks, but have you ever eaten ekiben on a train?

My father and brother are railroad enthusiasts, and we used to sometimes go out with our family to see or ride on the trains. On those times, we often had a travel lunchbox (ekiben) which was called "Touge no Kamameshi" for lunch. This ekiben that was first sold more than 60 years ago at Yokokawa Station in Gunma Prefecture and is still popular today.

The kamameshi ( a rice dish cooked in an iron pot) consists of nine different ingredients, including chicken and quail eggs, on a bed of brown rice. When I was a child, I could not eat all of the ingredients because there weren’t many that I liked.

But recently, I stopped by the Yokogawa service area on the expressway. There I found that the "Touge no Kamameshi" was on sale, so I decided to buy it for the first time in a long time. The ingredients were the same as in the past, and the smell made me feel nostalgic. It tastes so good now and reminds me of the memories of going out with my family at that time and we can no longer ride the train from that, because it has been closed down.

I gave it to my young daughter, but she didn't eat much of it, perhaps because it tasted like an adult's food. I wonder if there will come a time when she will enjoy it. I hope that the same old taste will remain until that time.

While all of you may have a different goal, there is one common purpose that you all share, which is to use the Japanese language in order to achieve something. I would be really glad if by learning Japanese here at JOI with me, and with your peers we can help to influence your life – even a little.
When I was a child, I used to perform a musical instrument, and played various kinds of music including pop and jazz. I also love to look at old buildings like temples and shrines and so I often travel. In my class, I would like to introduce some of Japanese culture and the traditions, through learning Japanese, and also introduce some of the characteristics of Japanese people. Lets face our goals together and go for it !
