dondoyaki-2022

Dondoyaki Festival : Burning of New Year's gate decorations

On the 9th of January, I went to the Dondoyaki Festival at Nikabe Shrine in Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. In Japan, on New Year's Day, people decorate their front doors with a shimenawa rope and a kadomatsu pine tree, and also decorate their houses with kagamimochi (mirror-shaped rice cakes). These are collectively called New Year's decorations.

When New Year's Day is over, these New Year's decorations are burned. Dondoyaki is a fire festival held at shrines and in local communities to burn these New Year's decorations. It is called "Dondoyaki", "Dondonyaki", or "Tondoyaki"depending on the region. It is usually held in mid-January after the New Year.

At my house, this year we decorated the front door with a shimenawa rope like the one in the picture. At the end of the New Year celebration season, we took this rope to the Dondoyaki.

The shrine I went to is said to be very old, dating back to 90 BC, and is famous for its Dondoyaki, a traditional fire festival that attracts many people every year.

Normally, visitors to Dondoyaki are treated to zenzai made by volunteers from the neighbourhood. Zenzai is a warm, sweet food made from red bean soup with rice cakes in it.

Everyone who comes to Dondoyaki is very much looking forward to the Zenzai. Unfortunately, last year and this year, due to the coronavirus, the Zenzai was cancelled and the atmosphere was a bit sad, with only a few people burning New Year's decorations. We hope that next year's event will be as lively as the previous years.

Konnichiwa! My name is Midori Miyake. After I graduated from university, I worked for a long time in a Japanese company, but a little while after getting married, I quit my job. After that, I studied and became a Japanese language teacher. I normally do yoga for my health. I think it's important to continue little by little everyday.

When learning Japanese, there are some times when it is fun and there are probably times when it is really difficult. But by continuing little by little you can improve your Japanese language ability and then if you can find some pleasure in using your Japanese in the classes I will be so glad. With language learning, speaking a lot is the path to improving. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, let's just speak a lot of Japanese! I am looking forward to speaking Japanese with you all.
