Japanese breeds of dog

There are some breeds of dog that are native to Japan. Most of them were bred to be hunting dogs and are quite closely related to wolves.

The oldest breed is known to be the Hokkaido Inu dog breed. Their features (longer thicker coat, and small ears) make them suited to colder climates.

The Akita dog breed is well known for the story of Hachiko. And the most popular breed is the Shiba Inu breed which this blog is the breed of dog that Suzuki sensei's family owns.

Read this blog about it and learn some new Japanese vocabulary and Kanji. Listen to the video on YouTube and practice for the JLPT tests for free.

Japanese Shiba Inu

We have a pet Shiba Inu dog in our home. The Shiba Inu is a Japanese dog native to Japan and it is a popular breed often seen in TV commercials. Many people may have an image of them as being smart and gentle dogs, but when you own one, there are many aspects that differ from the commonly held image.

Firstly, Shiba Inus have an independent and stubborn streak, making them difficult to train. This is because the Shiba Inu is a breed that is one of the most closely related to the wolf, and has the natural temperament of a wild animal. They also get bored easily and have difficulty concentrating. And Shiba Inus value personal space and are not often overly clingy towards people. They often maintain a moderate distance from their owners. They are not good at physical contact and often do not like to be touched.

I find it interesting that they are similar to the Japanese in that they are not good at having physical contact ('skinship').

I live in Tochigi prefecture with my husband and two children. Tochigi has two towns that are very popular tourist attractions; Nikko, which is famous for its World Heritage shrine and its wonderful nature, and Mashiko which is famous for its pottery. Its only two hours by train from Tokyo, so if you get that chance, please come and visit Tochigi.
