otsukimi-2023

Otsukimi

This week we introduce 「お月見」(literally: Watch The Moon.)

September is the clearest month of the year when the air is clear and the moon is at its most beautiful. Otsukimi is an event to admire the moon 「お月見」(literally: Watch The Moon) at this time of year.

The day when the moon is full is called '15 Nights'「十五夜」 and this year, 2023, it will be on 29 September. On this day, people offer the autumn harvest to the gods to express their gratitude for the harvest and also to wish for good food in the future.

It is an event not only to enjoy the beauty of the moon, but also to deeply connect it with the harvest. This event was also introduced from China about 1,200 years ago. Many Japanese events were originally related to agriculture or adopted from China.
