Shichi-Go-San-2023

Autumn insect sounds in Japan

This week we introduce 'Shichi-Go-San' - also sometimes known as the 7-5-3 Festival.

Shichi-Go-San is an event to express gratitude for the growth of small children and to wish them happiness and long life in the future. Boys visit a shrine with their families the year they turn five, and girls the year they turn three and seven.

It is often held around 15 November. There are several reasons why 15 November was chosen. One of them is that this day has traditionally been a day when demons do not go outside.

One item closely related to Shichi-Go-San is Chitoseame. It is a candy made of red, yellow, yellowish or reddish-pink. It is a long, thin red-and-white candy, which in Japan means the colour of happiness, with the wish that the person will live a long life until they reach the age of 1,000. Children receive this candy after visiting the shrine.I still remember how difficult it was for me to hold it because it was in a long, thin paper bag.

I started teaching Japanese to technical intern trainees and internship students, and since 2019, online Japanese instructor at JOI.

My main focus is on Business Japanese and JLPT grammar (N1,N2.N3) in particular. I am also available for short-term private lessons to improve your business Japanese skills before joining a company, taking an assignment, or changing jobs on your requested schedule.

I worked for a major machine manufacturer for about 40 years. During that time, I was assigned to various departments such as factories, trading, R&D, sales, general affairs, accounting, and auditing. With these experiences, I believe I can provide you with practical assistance in various situations when you are doing business in Japanese.
