A scary story

There are a number of scary stories in Japan, and Imoto sensei has introduced one of her own experiences in this week's blog.

Her recommendation for how to read this story is, if you find any words you do not understand, do not worry about it too much, continue reading. We have only added the minimum necessary vocabulary with the intention of having you read the flow of the story. Please try to read through the story with the minimum of vocabulary checks and see if you can follow the tale this way.

The making and reading of the video was also done by Imoto sensei too, so please listen to the way she tells about her experience and practice your Japanese listening.

Cold Hands

cold-hands

Cold Hands

That night I was staying over at my friend's house who was living alone. I was sleeping on the living room sofa and my friend was sleeping the room at the end of the living room. It was a night with a bright moon.

In the middle of the night, I was woken up by a sound of faint footsteps. The footsteps were making their way slowly from the direction of the hallway towards the living room. I thought that my friend had gone to the toilet and was on her way back to her room.

However, the footsteps came closer to me. I thought that it must be my friend coming to check in on me, so I turned to my side and pretended to be sleeping. The footsteps stopped right next to my head. I felt the presence of someone.

Suddenly, I felt something really cold on my cheek. It felt just as if someone had pressed some ice onto my cheek. It was so cold that I was shocked and opened my eyes. The cold things were hands. Were they my friend's really cold hands – no, they were not my friend's hands. They were an unknown man's hands !He was bluish white, with a long face and chiselled nose, and had thin eyes. I smiled a sad looking smile while looking at me. I instinctively thought, “It's a ghost!”

Then the ghost spoke to me, “It's alright. It's alright.”

These words did not come from the ghost's mouth, and I didn't hear them with my ears. I heard them directly in my head. I cannot explain it well, but it might be something like what people call 'telepathy'. I quickly pulled my bedsheets over my head. Then I prayed “Go away! Disappear ! Disappear!”under the covers. And the ghost still continued to say something. But I was so confused that I couldn't hear what the ghost was saying at all. While doing this, suddenly it became quiet all around. Then I heard a voice in my head say, “It's all right”. And then everything went quiet.

After a while, I timidly poked my head out from the bed covers. The moonlight reflected on the white wall. I looked around the room, but I couldn't see the ghost's figure anywhere. Everything was really quiet and I could hear the sound of my friend sleeping in the far room.

In the morning, I tried to talk about the ghost with my friend, but she said, “Oh stop talking about that sort of thing !” and she wouldn't even hear about it.

But was that ghost real or was it a dream ? What was it trying to tell me ? A long time has passed since then, but I cannot forget those cold hands and that sad smile.

Mina sama Konnichiwa ! My name is Rie Imoto. I live in Nara city with my husband and daughter. Nara city is the oldest capital of Japan and there still a lot of nature remaining from the old days.

I love photography, and always walk with my camera and enjoy taking pictures of flowers, the sky, mountains, and nature. I also like running. I often run around my neighborhood. I sometimes participate in marathons. When I run, it refreshes both my mind and body and I can spend the time energetically.

When I was a child, I was very interested in foreign cultures and so, because it was in the age before the Internet, I used to enjoy exchanging letters with many people from different countries. I am so glad that we can connect with people all over the world now using the Internet. I am really looking forward to teaching you Japanese and to hear about your stories in Japanese.
