Japanese summer food

Japan has four quite distinct seasons, although some claim that the rainy season would actually make it five, and Japanese people tend to eat different food during the different seasons. It is one of the favorite discussions in Japanese small talk to discuss the various foods available each season.

In the convenience stores and supermarkets, you see the change of the seasons in the displayed foods and beverages.

In this Japanese learning blog by Hachiyama sensei, she introduces one of her favorite summer foods. Please read this blog to learn new Japanese vocabulary and phrases. And listen to the blog and watch the video to enjoy learning more – you might even be able to smell the aroma !

私は、夏が嫌いです。食欲も落ちるし、外に出たくなくなるし、一年で一番体力がなくなる季節です。 そんな季節でも唯一楽しみにしている食べ物があります。 それは、うなぎです。うなぎ料理の中でも、「せいろ蒸し」が一番好きです。

うなぎには栄養のある成分がたくさん含まれていて、夏バテ防止に大変良いといわれています。しかし、いろいろな理由で、うなぎの量がだんだん減ってきました。それに対して、うなぎの値段は、それこそ うなぎ上りに上がってきて、子供のころのように、気軽に食べられなくなりました。

それでも、年に2回程度、なにかのきっかけでありがたくいただくことにしています。今回のブログはそのきっかけ①ですね。 このなんともいえない香りをお届けできないのが、とても残念です。 次回のブログも うなぎトピックにしようかな。。。

私(わたし)は、夏(なつ)が嫌(きら)いです。食欲(しょくよく)も落(お)ちるし、外(そと)に出(で)たくなくなるし、一年(いちねん)で一番(いちばん)体力(たいりょく)がなくなる季節(きせつ)です。 そんな季節(きせつ)でも唯一(ゆいいつ)楽(たの)しみにしている食(た)べ物(もの)があります。 それは、うなぎです。うなぎ料理(りょうり)の中(なか)でも、「せいろ蒸(む)し」が一番(いちばん)好(す)きです。

Japanese Eel Unagi

I hate summer. My appetite goes down, I don't want to go outside, its the season of the year when my physical condition is at its worst. But there is just one food that I look forward to eating even in this season. This is 'Unagi' (eel in English). And of all the eel cuisine, I like it steamed using a bamboo steamer (or 'seiro mushi') the best.

Eel includes a lot of nutritional value and it is said to be a great prevention for summer heat stroke. But for various reasons, the quantity of eels is graadually decreasing. And due to this, the price of eel has indeed skyrocketed, so now we cannot feel free to eat it anytime like we did when we were kids.

Even then, about twice a year I try to find a chance to be able to enjoy it. This time, one of the chances I found was this blog. The fact that I cannot send across to you this delicious, indescribable aroma is really a shame. May be I should make eel the topic of my next blog as well.
