Sushi, the quintessential Japanese cuisine

Sushi is the quintessential Japanese cuisine and is ubiquitous in Japanese supermarkets, convenience stores, and in restaurants around the country.

There are many kinds of Sushi, but the typical dish referred to as 'Sushi' is in fact just one type, called Nigirizushi, which literally means hand-pressed Sushi.

みなさんは「寿司は好きですか?」と聞かれたら、何と答えますか?おそらく「好き!」と答える人は多いでしょう。

日本人でも知らない人が多いですが、寿司には正しい食べ方があります。もちろん好きなように食べていいのですが、おいしい寿司をよりおいしく食べる方法があります。

その方法は、寿司は味の薄いものから味が濃いものの順に食べるといいそうです。例えば、味が薄いものは、鯛やひらめなど、味が濃いものはトロ、ウニなどです。味が濃いものを食べて、薄いものを食べたいときはガリを食べたり、お茶を飲んだりして、口の中をさっぱりさせるといいです。好きだからといって同じものばかり食べるのはマナー違反だそうです。いろいろな寿司をまんべんなく食べるほうがいいです。

みなさんは「寿司(すし)は好(す)きですか?」と聞(き)かれたら、何(なん)と答(こた)えますか?おそらく「好(す)き!」と答(こた)える人(ひと)は多(おお)いでしょう。

日本人(にほんじん)でも知(し)らない人(ひと)が多(おお)いですが、寿司(すし)には正(ただ)しい食(た)べ方(かた)があります。もちろん好(す)きなように食(た)べていいのですが、おいしい寿司(すし)をよりおいしく食(た)べる方法(ほうほう)があります。

その方法(ほうほう)は、寿司(すし)は味(あじ)の薄(うす)いものから味(あじ)が濃(こ)いものの順(じゅん)に食(た)べるといいそうです。例(たと)えば、味(あじ)が薄(うす)いものは、鯛(たい)やひらめなど、味(あじ)が濃(こ)いものはトロ、ウニなどです。味(あじ)が濃(こ)いものを食(た)べて、薄(うす)いものを食(た)べたいときはガリを食(た)べたり、お茶(ちゃ)を飲(の)んだりして、口(くち)の中(なか)をさっぱりさせるといいです。好(す)きだからといって同(おな)じものばかり食(た)べるのはマナー違反(いはん)だそうです。いろいろな寿司(すし)をまんべんなく食(た)べるほうがいいです。

How to eat Sushi correctly

When asked, “Do you like Sushi?” the number of people who answer, “Yes! I do.” is probably a lot.

There are many Japanese people who do not know this, but there is a correct way to eat Sushi. Of course you can eat Sushi any way you like, but there is a tastier way to eat delicious Sushi.

They say that the way is to eat Sushi so that you eat the lighter flavoured ones first, and then go on to taste the deeper flavours in that order. For example Red Snapper and Flounder are examples of lighter flavoured Sushi , whereas Tuna Belly and Sea Urchin have deeper flavours. After you have eaten a deeper flavoured Sushi, and if you then want to try a lighter flavoured one, then it is a good idea to eat some pickled ginger and drink some green tea which refreshes the inside of your mouth. And although you might like one particular type, eating just the same type of Sushi is apparently a breach of etiquette. It is better to eat different kinds of Sushi equally.

If you come to Japan, please try to enjoy some delicious Sushi.
