今朝（7/18）のニュースで、長崎県の「洞窟そうめん」が今年もオープンしたという情報がありました。「洞窟そうめん」は、第二次大戦末期に利用されていた人工の洞窟の中で「そうめん」が食べられる、期間限定のレストランだそうです。炎天下でも、洞窟内の気温は20度前後と涼しく、ここで食べるそうめんは夏の風物詩になっているとか。ここ以外にも日本・世界各地にはさまざまな『洞窟』があり、涼しさや水・空気のみずみずしさ、神秘的な風景などの魅力でたくさんの人を集める場所となっています。

一方で、洞窟と言えば、先月タイで13人が国立公園の洞窟に入ったまま約2週間も閉じ込められた事故がありました。洞窟に入ったあと、大雨に伴う増水で出られなくなったという事故でした。予測不可能な自然の脅威と、洞窟の恐ろしさを初めて知った事故でした。

雨にしても、日本は今年も大雨で甚大な被害を受けました。雨が降らなければ、水不足・熱中症・作物被害などが問題になり、降り過ぎると洪水や土砂崩れで多くの被害が出ます。そして、今回の水害では、人間が災害防止の為に作った砂防ダムや貯水ダムが被害を深刻化させた一因でもあったようです。

人間は自然を上手に楽しむことができますが、どんなに科学や技術が進歩しても、自然の『負の部分』をゼロにすることはできず、人間が自然に対して手を加えたことがかえってマイナスに働くことを考えると、やはり人間は自然には勝てないのだなと痛感します。どんな時も、自然には＋と－があるということを忘れないで、日常の生活と自然の恵みを楽しんでいきたいと思います。

自然（しぜん）の恩恵（おんけい）と脅威（きょうい）

今朝（けさ）（7/18）のニュースで、長崎県（ながさきけん）の「洞窟（どうくつ）そうめん」が今年（ことし）もオープンしたという情報（じょうほう）がありました。「洞窟（どうくつ）そうめん」は、第二次大戦末期（だいにじせかいたいせんまっき）に利用（りよう）されていた人工（じんこう）の洞窟（どうくつ）の中（なか）で「そうめん」が食（た）べられる、期間限定（きかんげんてい）のレストランだそうです。炎天下（えんてんか）でも、洞窟内（どうくつない）の気温（きおん）は20度（ど）前後（ぜんご）と涼（すず）しく、ここで食（た）べるそうめんは夏（なつ）の風物詩（ふうぶつし）になっているとか。ここ以外（いがい）にも日本（にほん）・世界各地（せかいかくち）にはさまざまな『洞窟（どうくつ）』があり、涼（すず）しさや水（みず）・空気（くうき）のみずみずしさ、神秘的（しんぴてき）な風景（ふうけい）などの魅力（みりょく）でたくさんの人（ひと）を集（あつ）める場所（ばしょ）となっています。

一方（いっぽう）で、洞窟（どうくつ）と言（い）えば、先月（せんげつ）タイで13人（にん）が国立公園（こくりつこうえん）の洞窟（どうくつ）に入（はい）ったまま約（やく）2週間（しゅうかん）も閉（と）じ込（こ）められた事故（じこ）がありました。洞窟（どうくつ）に入（はい）ったあと、大雨（おおあめ）に伴（ともな）う増水（ぞうすい）で出（で）られなくなったという事故（じこ）でした。予測不可能（よそくふかのう）な自然（しぜん）の脅威（きょうい）と、洞窟（どうくつ）の恐（おそ）ろしさを初（はじ）めて知（し）った事故（じこ）でした。

雨（あめ）にしても、日本（にほん）は今年（ことし）も大雨（おおあめ）で甚大（じんだい）な被害（ひがい）を受（う）けました。雨（あめ）が降（ふ）らなければ、水不足（みずぶそく）・熱中症（ねっちゅうしょう）・作物被害（さくもつひがい）などが問題（もんだい）になり、降（ふ）り過（す）ぎると洪水（こうずい）や土砂崩れ（どしゃくずれ）で多（おお）くの被害（ひがい）が出（で）ます。そして、今回（こんかい）の水害（すいがい）では、人間（にんげん）が災害防止（さいがいぼうし）の為（ため）に作（つく）った砂防（さぼう）ダムや貯水（ちょすい）ダムが被害（ひがい）を深刻化（しんこくか）させた一因（いちいん）でもあったようです。

人間（にんげん）は自然（しぜん）を上手（じょうず）に楽（たの）しむことができますが、どんなに科学（かがく）や技術（ぎじゅつ）が進歩（しんぽ）しても、自然（しぜん）の『負（ふ）の部分（ぶぶん）』をゼロにすることはできず、人間（にんげん）が自然（しぜん）に対（たい）して手（て）を加（くわ）えたことがかえってマイナスに働（はたら）くことを考（かんが）えると、やはり人間（にんげん）は自然（しぜん）には勝（か）てないのだなと痛感（つうかん）します。どんな時（とき）も、自然（しぜん）には＋と－があるということを忘（わす）れないで、日常（にちじょう）の生活（せいかつ）と自然（しぜん）の恵（めぐ）みを楽（たの）しんでいきたいと思（おも）います。

The blessings and menace of nature

This morning's news (July 18th) had some information that Doukutsu Soumen has opened for this year in Nagasaki prefecture. Doukutsu Soumen is limited edition restaurant which uses some man-made caves built at the end of the Second World War and in which you can eat Soumen noodles. Even under the blazing sun, the temperatures inside these caves are around 20 degrees and it is cool so that eating Soumen noodles here has become a summer highlight. Other than these, there are other caves in Japan and in locations all around the world which, due to the freshness of the water and air in them and the mystical aura they have, have become popular places for a lot of people to assemble.

On the other hand, talking about caves, last month there was an incident of 13 people being trapped for about 2 weeks inside caves in a national park in Thailand. After they had entered the caves, rising water levels brought by heavy rains meant that they could not get out. This incident made me realize the danger of the unpredictability of nature and the fear of caves.

And on the subject of rain, Japan has received tremendous damage from torrential rain this year as well. If rain doesn't fall, then we suffer from lack of water, heatstroke and agricultural disasters, yet if too much falls then there are many disasters from flooding to landslides. And one of the causes of the seriousness of the water damage this time around came from the anti-erosion dams and water-storage dams that were built to prevent disaster damage.

We humans can enjoy nature well, but no matter how much we progress in science and technology, we cannot reduce the downsides of nature to zero and I feel keenly that human application within nature, on the contrary has minus effects and feel that we humans cannot compete with nature. I think we can enjoy the blessings of nature in our daily life, but we should not forget that nature always has a plus and minus effect to it.
