Using computers in Japan

When you come to Japan and start to live in the country, or when you start to learn Japanese, one of the first hurdles you face is using the computer in Japanese. This has now become quite easy and only requires setting the IME into the Japanese language.

There are many online guides to teach how to write and how to use the keyboard too.

But in this blog by a Japanese language teacher, Yatabe sensei explores an issue which is universal when using a computer – it is not a problem that is limited to Japanese alone.

Read the blog and listen to the YouTube video to practice Japanese listening skills. Yatabe sensei reads the blog out loud herself in the video, so it is a chance to practice listening to fluent Japanese spoken.

Left-Right Hand Mouse

Which hand do you use the mouse with? I think the overwhelming majority of people use the mouse with their right hand.

About a month ago I had a pain in my right hand and after giving a lot of thought as to what was causing it, I reached the answer that my hand was probably tired from using my mouse. So I decided to try using the mouse with my left hand, and after some research, I learned for the first time that there is a setting in Windows to change the mouse to left handed or right handed. When using with your right hand, the left side of the mouse is the normal click, but when set to use with the left hand, it becomes the right side.

Using it with my left hand was awkward at first, but I gradually got used to it. The pain in my right hand has also healed. From now on, I will change the hands I hold my mouse with from time to time.

Since I started using the mouse with my left hand, I looked for a setting to change the position of the browser scroll bar from the right side to the left, but there was none. Apparently that is not possible. That' s a shame.

So many things in the world are decided for right-handed people. I was reminded once again that there must be many inconveniences for left-handed people.

Konnichiwa. My name is Kumiko Yatabe. I live in Saitama, just North of Tokyo.

The best way to learn to speak a foreign language is to talk with a person from that country.

Books and CD learning materials as well as movies and music from that country are good learning tools. But unfortunately they do not talk back to you or correct your mistakes.

Please pop into the classroom. If you are aiming to talk fluent Japanese just like a native, or are interested in enjoying to study in a leisurely manner, I am really looking forward to meeting you and many types of students and help you in your quest to master the language. If you don't understand something, please feel free to ask. I will try to make the lessons as easy to understand for everyone.
