New types of tourism in Japan

This has been a difficult time for the tourism economy of many countries. And as the world slowly recovers, there may be some changes in the types of tourism that are popular.

Going to crowded spots with the generic sites of temples and historical buildings may become less popular. And ways of connecting our 'at home' enjoyment with our outdoor activities may become a new 'thing'.In Japan, this trend has already started.

Holy Site Pilgrimages

A pilgrimage is when believers visit a site that is important to them within a religion. In Japan, 'Henro', which is a pilgrimage of 88 temples in Shikoku, is famous. Today I am not going to introduce religious holy ground, but some sites that appear in Anime, Manga and movies that have become holy ground visited in a new style of tourism.

The 2016 Anime movie “Kimi no Nawa/Your Name” faithfully depicted the streets of Tokyo town, and since then, many people have visited the sites to take photographs. According to one survey, there are about 2000 of these kinds of sites in Tokyo. These new “holy sites” have been spreading across Japan. And have been focused on ways to increase tourists to sight-seeing spots without having to make large investments.

I also visited some holy ground that I saw in a movie recently. For people who have not seen the movie, the scenery there was nothing special, but as I walked around there, I felt the same feeling as the movie's hero. For people who have grown tired of the famous sight-seeing spots, I would recommend this new style of 'holy pilgrimage' tourism.
