Working from home around the world

As working from home has increased and online communication has become a norm, one issue that is recently receiving media attention is the health effects of sitting too long.

There are a few countries that have data on this and Japan is one of them. In this blog by a Japanese teacher for learners of the language, Yukiko Takane has found some data on this problem that is not surprising, but she also suggests some interesting solutions too.

Sitting-too-long

Sitting too long

According to some data, Japanese people sit for on average 8 to 9 hours a day. This is the highest in the world apparently. We are happy to be first in anything, but some firsts are a problem. Research results show that people who sit for more than 8 hours a day are inviting serious health damage to themselves. It also adversely influences heart problems, diabetes, and mental health issues.

Now due to the Coronavirus, we cannot go out much and working from home has increased. So sitting hours have gotten longer and it is not only Japan's problem now.

Well, if that's the case, let's exercise! So I immediately started to jog 3 kilometers. After jogging I feel good and beer tastes really delicious after that too. This didn't last for even 3 days, after exercising I drank and ate and then sat and didn't move at all - it was a bad example.

It is important to continue something on a daily basis. In order to avoid sitting for over 30 minutes, take a 2 or 3 minute break. It is important to keep it in mind to exercise a little, like standing frequently, moving around and using the stairs. After that beer will taste good I think!

takane

Hajimemashite, I am Yukiko Takane.
I live in Chiba Prefecture. My hometown is near the ocean and is surrounded by rice fields - its a laid-back place. The sashimi and rice is really good here. My family home makes rice as well, so I usually help out during the harvest season. I may look weak, but actually I can lift a 30kg bag of rice.

In the past, I taught Japanese in Saipan and Cebu islands. The people I got to know there are precious to me. I am really looking forward to meeting you all in the online classrooms. I have been called 'Takani' Sensei or 'Okane' sensei by my students. Well, I am not a 'crab' nor am I 'money' - the name is Takane. Doozo yoroshiku onegaishimasu.

Try to use your newly learned vocabulary and phrases all the time in the lessons. Looking forward to meeting you all in class !
