The four seasons of Japan

It is well known that Japan has four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. But because of the elongated nature of the islands of Japan, from north to south, the changes of seasons are slightly different between each area and the severity of each season can differ from place to place.

In this blog by a Japanese teacher living in Niigata, you can read about and also see photos of the difference between seasons.

Fujinawa sensei is teaching the JLPT test preparation class for the July 2021 test. She includes vocabulary that is often tested in the N4 and N3 examinations.

Glad to experience four seasons

In the place where I live, which is Niigata prefecture in Japan, there are clearly four seasons. Summer is hot, and besides, in winter, snow falls.. The colors are also different in each season. So you can sense the seasons both through your body temperature and with your sight. For me, this the norm.

But from the experience of teaching Japanese lessons at JOI, I came to realize that this was special. In Japan, the break before the start of the new school year is called the Spring Break and the break from the end of July to August, we call the Summer Holiday. But one day I asked a JOI student, “What do you do during your summer holiday?” The student was from Singapore, and they replied, “We do not have a summer holiday”. And I realized that in Singapore where the temperature does not change throughout the year, they do not make the distinction between four seasons.

And on top of this, this happened when I was teaching the grammar lesson, 'from ___ ~ to ___' “In Japan, from the end of March through to April, Sakura cherry blossoms are beautiful. How about in your country?” And a student answered, “There are no special flowers.”

Thanks to the students at JOI, I was taught how happy I was to experience things that I had thought to be the norm.

These are photos of Niigata in winter and spring in 2021. Looking at these, you can see what I mean when I say that there are clearly four seasons.

Hello My name is Miyako Fujinawa.
I live in Nagaoka city in Niigata prefecture, which is famous for having "the best fireworks in Japan".
Through the process of teaching Japanese, I can get to meet various people from different countries, and find out some cultural differences and I find this very interesting. And since I don't get to travel often, one of the things that I look forward to is listening to everyone's stories and find myself feeling as though I have taken a trip to various places. I look forward to meeting you.
