Japanese monsters

When people mention Japanese monsters, many think of the giant movie monsters like Godzilla. But there are many monsters, demons, ghouls and ghosts that can be found in ancient Japanese literature and folklore.

It would be no surprise then that there is a monster that is related to the current pandemic. But not in the way you would imagine. This monster comes to prevent or reduce the pandemic.

Japanese teacher, Yuki Kamiyama introduces this interesting twist in Japanese culture and also helps you to learn Japanese by translating the vocabulary and showing the Kanji readings too.

amabie

Amabie; Japanese monster

In 2020, due to the effect of the Coronavirus, the world was thrown into a terrible state, and it was a year in which we all came to appreciate the value of a healthy lifestyle. The Japanese Ministry of Health appointed an “Amabie”as a character to enlighten us on ways to prevent viral infection and used it on their homepage which in turn became a topic in conversations.

An“Amabie”was a monster that existed in Kumamoto prefecture during the Edo period. It has long hair, with three legs, and a mouth in the shape of a bird’s beak, and its body is covered in scales like a fish. It was passed on through the ages that one evening it appeared from the sea with a flash of light, and it predicted that, “An epidemic will occur soon”and it continued, “when this happens, draw a picture of me and show it people and if you do so, the epidemic will reduce.” So because of this, it has come to be said that if you draw a picture of an “Amabie”a miracle will occur.

Many people drew pictures of “Amabie”and submitted them on Social Networks praying for the end of the Coronavirus pandemic. There were even some people who made dolls and baked sweets of it. During these anxious days, the form of the Amabie”helped to calm people’s spirits.
