Japan's Working Style Reform' initiative

Japan has had a long tradition of lifetime employment policies and time-based wages. But with the Abe government's initiative to reform the work-life balance of the labour force, there have been some changes in the market.

In this blog for Japanese learners, Japanese teacher Ayako Suzuki talks about how these reforms could affect how people take their new year holidays in 2019.

How people take their New Year's holidays

2019 is soon coming to an end, and a new year is coming soon. In your country, do the restaurants and supermarkets stay open during the New Year season? In Japan, many food and drink shops, supermarkets, and convenience stores open from January 1st . And there are some shops that are running on December 31st as well as January 1st , from the customer's point of view, we feel it is convenient but it must be really tough for the people working there.

However, this new year season, there are many shops that are going to be closing earlier. This is due to the effect of the Japanese government 'Working style reform' initiative. The aim of the work style reform is to make them realize the 'Ease of working' for the labour market. And for this reason, each and every person has to change our way of thinking.

While watching the news about how people are taking their holidays during the New Year season, I thought to myself, that it would be good if more people get to rest up during this year's New Year break.
