Japanese bridges

Japan is well known for its bridge building expertise. There are a number of very large, architectural wonders among the bridges of Japan which are generally made with steel and concrete.

There are also many traditional bridges made from stone. And there are of course the iconic bridges found in Japanese gardens. For bridge enthusiasts, it is a wonderful country to explore.

In this blog by Kinoi sensei of JOI online Japanese school, she introduces one of the most loved bridges in Japan.

The Akashi Kaikyo Ohashi bridge

In February, I went to Awaji Shima in Hyogo prefecture. You can get to Awaji Shima by crossing the The Akashi Kaikyo Ohashi bridge. The Akashi Kaikyo Ohashi bridge is 3,911 meters long. It is the longest suspension in the world. It is 298.8 meters high. That is about the same height as the Tokyo Tower (332.6 meters). The diameter of one cable is 1122cm using about 36830 wires per cable. The cables are this thick and strong because they are suspending such a large and heavy object.

Here you can take an observation tour of the bridge. On this tour, you can climb up to the very top of the bridge. It feels really nice, but because it is about the same height as the Tokyo Tower, it is also a little scary.

From Tokyo Tower you can see a view of the city, but from this bridge you can enjoy a 360 degree panoramic view where you can see not only the cities of Kobe and Akashi, but also the whole bridge, as well as the sea and mountains and Awaji Shima island. You can also walk under the road on which cars cross. It is 50 meters above the sea line. You might be able to see ships passing under your feet. I recommend this tour for people who are interested in construction, people who enjoy great views, and people who like to have interesting experiences.

At night time, the illumination is very beautiful. And on clear days, you can see this bridge from far away. You can see it from the JR and Hanshin trains in the southern part of Hyogo prefecture. This bridge is not just for crossing, it can be enjoyed in many different ways.

To tell the truth, I wasn't that interested in bridges. But after looking into it a bit, I began to find it interesting, As an architectural object it is very interesting, so you can enjoy just looking at it. You can enjoy looking at the bridge. And you can enjoy looking from the bridge.
