Children's books in Japanese

When you are learning Japanese, finding interesting level-appropriate reading can be difficult. Japanese reading is tested in the JLPT tests and your ability to skim and get information from texts is a valuable one.

In this blog for Japanese learners, one of our teachers Sachiko Someya has an amusing story about children's books in Japanese and her son's choices from the variety of titles on offer at a bookstore.

Read the blog and learn new Kanji, Also listen to Someya sensei reading the blog out herself to practice Japanese listening and pronunciation.

Books for the brain

What kind of books did you read when you were a child? In my case, I have a memory of often reading Grimm fairy tales, Andersen's Fairy Tales and biographies among other things. Recently there are really a wide variety of books for children, when I went to the children's book corner, I was really surprised by the variety.

The other day I went to a bookshop, and my son chose book called [Atama ga yoku naru] or [How to make yourself smarter]. It consisted of 50 tips on how to make yourself smarter. I wanted him to read a book of stories, and my inner voice said, “That one?!?” at his choice, but my son looked so pleased as he took it home in expectation and started to read it right away.

I was interested in what it would say. First of all, it predictably gave tips like, 'Make sure to eat breakfast' and 'Get a good night's sleep'. However, from the middle stage, there were some surprising points. For example, 'Doodle' or 'Sometimes just space out' or 'its OK to quit something after only doing it for a short time'. I thought to myself, “Those are not things l'd like someone to tell my kids” and sure enough my son started to say things like, “Oh wow! It's OK to just space out!” There were some other tips which made even an adult like me think, “Oh I see” ... for example 'Don't worry too much about other people's attention on you' or 'Take to watching the adults that you admire'. After you have done reading it, I think this book would give someone confidence. The other day when I spotted the book on his desk, it had some tags stuck to it, I wonder if he is putting the tips into practice. What I really want to say to him is, “If you have time to read that book, I wish you'd use it study!” But I thought to myself that I would wait patiently for some results to appear.

In the book store, some of the other book titles that my son was undecided to buy or not, were [How to get along well with friends] and [How to give a good presentation]. All of them are books that even adults could enjoy reading. The next time you go to a book store, take a look around the children's corner. I think you might find some books that would put an adult to shame.
