Hello, my name is Chie Shimada. I love Japanese music. Whenever we have festivals, my friends and I enjoy playing the Japanese drums and the flute. If you ever get the chance, please try listening to some Japanese drum and flute music. My family and I lived in New Zealand for a year. There I studied English for 6 months and taught Japanese at a junior high school for the other 6 months. Language learning is really interesting, both when you're teaching and when you're learning—you're always making new discoveries. Here at our online Japanese school, I intend to put my heart into all my lessons and make sure they are enjoyable and easy to understand. It's all right to make mistakes—just relax and talk. I'm looking forward to meeting you in the classroom.
I teach the Discussion Dojo, Beginner 1, and Introductory classes. Introductory is where we teach Japanese to students who have never studied Japanese before. While keeping the classwork easy to understand, we learn a variety of basic Japanese—greetings, how to introduce yourself, a few basic grammatical structures, hiragana, and numbers. At the Beginner 1 level, students move onto more grammar points and additional Japanese vocabulary. There are quite a few grammar points, but once you master these, basic daily conversation is within your reach. In all classes, I add illustrations and English translations to make the gist of the lesson readily understandable. The Discussion Dojo is a chance to talk freely about a selected topic. It is a great chance to improve your practical Japanese and enjoy talking in Japanese. The dojo is an environment to polish conversation skills, so I strive to help students extend their speaking ability. As students discuss the selected topic, I emphasize particularly a student's particularly good choice of words, or suggest changes or corrections to make the sentences more natural. I am always thinking about how to make the students relax during class. In every class, we learn something new, so it is natural to take extra time thinking up answers to my questions or making mistakes along the way. Still, the most natural language comes when you are at ease, so I want to create a classroom where students can relax and enjoy the learning experience. I take great pleasure when I can sense that students are really starting to understand what we are covering in class. I hope that attitude helps students learn even more quickly.
