Introducing IKEDA Maki

Hello, my name is Maki Ikeda.

I always seem to be relocating: through job transfers and other changes, I have moved more than 15 times in my lifetime. Although it's tough to pick up roots and start anew in an unfamiliar town, I always look forward to the new people, new surroundings, and new food!

It is especially a pleasure for me to teach in this online forum, setting aside time differences and national borders to study together with students from around the world. Do you have a special goal in mind for making use of your new Japanese language skills? I will work hard to help you achieve it.

Please join me in our online Japanese classroom.

Teaching Style
What kinds of activities or lessons do you include in your Japanese classes?

Intermediate
In each lesson, we study one or two pieces of grammar or grammatical phrases. We look at the situations in which the grammar is used, and then, after understanding how to use it in conversations, you can speak out and practice it. It is perfectly alright to make mistakes. If you can't say something well, or come across a word you don't understand, I will help you out. At the end of the lesson, we try to use the grammar covered in the lesson to express ourselves and discuss our thoughts. It's a great chance to listen to and communicate with your classmates. One of the strengths of FlexLessons is that you can learn new vocabulary from classmates, too, and enjoy talking to a range of people. Please come give it a try.

Intermediate Grammar (incl. JLPT N2 & N3)
In each lesson we cover two grammar points and do a quiz. The lesson usually starts with a quick warm-up that usually takes the form of a kanji or vocabulary quiz. Then, we move to an example sentence that introduces the grammar, its usage, and its meaning. If there is anything you don't understand, please feel free to ask questions. We then go on to make some short sentences using the grammar point, and check how well we've understood the grammar point. The aim is to prepare for the coming examination one lesson at a time.

Advanced
The advanced level lessons usually focus on a popular discussion point in current affairs or phenomenon affecting society (for example, shopping refugees, loneliness, the wave of people moving to take up rural life), and express our opinions on these topics. I ask students to express their thoughts and comment on other students' opinions as well. The lesson gives you an opportunity to think through some opinions and express yourself freely.
Although not held as regularly, other lessons are based on business situations. These lessons introduce business manners and customs, and are often conducted in a quiz form. How do these customs differ within your country? Come find out and let us know.

Please share your thoughts on teaching and learning Japanese.
