Hajimemashite, everyone . My name is Maki Igarashi. Although I'm originally from Hokkaido, I live in Hiroshima because of my husband's work transfer. Hokkaido is the northernmost island of Japan. Winter is very cold and snowy, but Hokkaido's natural scenery is very beautiful, and we have a lot of delicious food. Here in Hiroshima, on Miya-jima Island, you can see Itsukushima Shrine, a world cultural heritage site. If you come to Japan, please visit these great places. I'd like to see you smile at least once in every class. The lessons will be, well, fun! Prepare well, and review well! :o) Don't get caught up thinking Japanese is a difficult language—enjoy studying and learning!
 What kinds of activities or lessons do you include in your Japanese classes?Introductory
Even if you've never spoken Japanese before, the lessons at this level help you to accomplish this feat.
With lots of slides that include pictures, photos, and English subtitles to help you along,
you will understand the meanings and learn to speak with a little practice.
Of course, the Japanese words you meet also have romaji (or roman alphabet) subtitles,
so you can relax and enjoy the learning experience.
We take the pace slowly, so there's no need to be nervous. Even if it's your first time, just come and join in
our online Japanese class.
Beginner 1
We learn some basic Japanese grammar at the Beginner 1 level.
You can see from the classroom slides what kind of situations the phrases are used in and practice how to use these phrases
in real life situations. The lessons are built so that you can advance even if your grasp of the grammar is a little shaky.
The method of learning is similar to the way a child learns language—you pick it up naturally as you go along.
For example, some verbs change form according to the type of phrases they are used in.
Instead of trying to memorize these conjugations, you can learn the phrase as a whole in one lesson.
Plus, if you are still learning hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji, you'll appreciate that romaji subtitles
are included in all lesson materials.
Beginner 2 Grammar (incl. JLPT N4)
At this level, we take each grammar point that appears on the JLPT N4 test, and we learn its application along
with the verbs, nouns and adjectives that are commonly used with it.
But these lessons are not all about test preparation and solving examination practice answers;
you also create and practice saying sentences yourself. While you learn and practice the grammar,
you also use new vocabulary to have conversations and enjoy learning.
All kanji include hiragana subtitles, but I sometimes add a quick kanji quiz to keep you on your toes!
Some lessons include JLPT practice questions, but let me emphasize these lessons are useful
even if you don't plan to take the JLPT. Many students who take this class are not planning to take the test at all.
Please share your thoughts on teaching and learning Japanese.At JOI, the teachers and support staff all put on priority on how to help students enjoy the learning process with as little stress or difficulty as possible. Don't ever worry about making mistakes in class—just feel free to talk about whatever you feel like, be it your likes or your everyday life. Learning a foreign language is all about getting used to speaking in that language, and language is a tool to help us communicate! Though we are geographically and physically far from each other, I strive to create a class that bridges that distance.
