Autumn insect sounds in Japan

Autumn insect sounds in Japan

This week we introduce the 'autumn insect sounds'.

Everyone in Japan knows the sound of cicadas as the sound of insects. During the summer, they chirp very loudly during the daytime.

But when summer is over and the cicadas are no longer heard, autumn insects gradually start to sing instead. There are many different kinds of autumn insects and they make a variety of small noises. Especially at night, they are often heard.

When we say they chirp, they do not chirp with their mouths, but rub their two wings together to make the sound. For example, the Japanese hear a Japanese insect called a Japanese water bug making a 'lean-lean' sound, and a Japanese pine beetle making a 'chin-chi-rolling' sound. Japanese people have long enjoyed the quiet autumn nights, listening to the sounds of insects in autumn. In many other countries, insect sounds seem to be regarded as 'noise'.

At our house, too, we hear various autumn insects chirping from the surroundings. I feel happy that we are close to nature, where insects can live, and that we are living there with them!
