kanji-2023

Japan's Kanji of the Year, 2023

This issue introduces 'Japan's Kanji of the Year, 2023'.

Every year on 12 December, there is an event to express what everyone was most interested in during the year in the form of a single kanji character. The decision is made by submissions from people all over the country.

For the year 2023, the character (zei) 「税(ぜい) 」- meaning "tax"- has been chosen. This is because this year in Japan there was a lot of discussion about the need to raise taxes for future defence and to combat the declining birth rate.

Kanji is a character whose meaning can be understood even by a single letter, and various words can be imagined. With hiragana and katakana, you cannot do that with a single character. That is a good point of kanji.

Incidentally, this presentation is done at Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto by a great monk, who writes it on a very large piece of paper with a large brush.

What Kanji character represents this year for you?

防衛(ぼうえい) defense

少子化対策(しょうしかたいさく) measures against declining birthrate

増税(ぞうぜい) tax increase
