Tofu special day in Japan

tofu-day

Tofu special day in Japan

This week we introduce Tofu Day.

Tofu Day is a day set aside by tofu producers to encourage everyone to eat more tofu, on 2 October. The reason for this date is that 10 and 2 can be read as To (10) and Fu (2). This is called a pun on the word (or goro awase)

Have you ever eaten tofu? Tofu is a health food made from soya beans and is tasty, cheap and nutritious. It has been commonly eaten in Japan for centuries in a variety of everyday dishes. It is used not only in Japanese cuisine, but also in Chinese cooking and sweets.

The Kanji for Tofu, by the way, is written 'the bean goes rotten'. Why is it written as 'tofu goes rotten' when it is not rotten? The reason is that tofu originally came to Japan from China, where the character for 'rot' in the old Chinese language meant 'soft'.

You should also try some tofu dishes.
