Japan earthquakes and seismic activity

Japan is located in a high seismic activity, near three tectonic plates.

Japan experiences about 400 earthquakes every day, although the vast majority are very small and detectable only using specialist apparatus.

But every now and again, a large earthquake does occur and if you happen to be travelling in Japan at the time, or living here, it is important to know what to do.

Below Kamiyama sensei explains some basic safety measures to take in an earthquake.

earthquake

In the event of an earthquake

On April 14th, there was a large earthquake in Kumamoto prefecture in Kyushu. It was magnitude 6.5 and Shindo (Japanese seismic scale) 7. Magnitude measures the size of the earthquake, and the Shindo scale measures the amount of shaking.

What should you do in the event of an earthquake ? If you inside a building, move away from any windows and hide under a desk or similar safe place. If you are inside a supermarket, please move away from the showcases. Shelves can fall and various goods may also fall down. Please refrain from using elevators. There is a risk of being shut in. If you are outside and there is no where to hide, please use a bag or something to protect your head, and lower your body. It is important to keep calm in your actions.
