Mechanical pencils in Japan

Japanese school children tend to write their assignments in pencil. This is true all the way up to university. In the British education system pens (more specifically fountain pens) were used during our childhoods, so finding High School and university papers written in pencil is a cultural surprise.

The use of pencils means that pencil sales tend to be high and many Japanese companies have a range of mechanical pencils that come in all different sizes, shapes and prices.

Here in this week's teacher's blog, Inamoto sensei introduces her view of the use of pencils and mechanical pencils in Japan.

Pencils

In Japanese Elementary schools, most students used mechanical pencils but they been banned. Of course there is no such actual law, but for some reason were they banned all over the country. People guess various reasons why, but one is that when you are learning Kanji, it is difficult to show the stops, hooks and fades in the characters when using mechanical pencils; (incidentally you can use mechanical pencils from Junior High School).

By the way, when I was in Elementary school, we used HB lead pencils, but recently many Elementary schools recommend students to use 2B pencil leads. The reason for this is because their brushstroke pressure is weak. When they use HB pencil leads, the figures are too weakly drawn and you cannot read them. Children born in the age of smart phone and tablet machines are good at using their touch screen operations but are not used to grasping and, twisting and writing while controlling their hands and finger pressure and thus those muscles have not developed. Because everyday life has become convenient, work which requires strength has decreased.

Talking about strength, in the Edo period women normally used to be able to carry 60kg bags of rice. I guess this is impossible for modern women to do. This is a sign of how much strength is not cultivated in modern life. Thinking of this, then the fact that children's hand strength has decreased is also one of the changes due to the times. I wonder whether we should try to oppose this trend or just accept it as the changing of the times, what do you think ?
