Japanese Otaku Culture

Some of the most famous and best-selling goods and fads in Japan, originally started from or are driven by what is commonly known as the Otaku Culture. The word Otaku which is loosely translated as geek, is typically used to refer to an avid fan of anime or manga or Japanese video games.

Here in this Japanese learner's blog, Takane sensei goes out to learn more about the Gacha craze at Tokyo's Narita airport.

Read the blog to learn Japanese and listen to the video to hear natural Japanese.

Gacha

“Let's use our left over coins from our travels on Gacha!” In the basement of the Terminal 2 building at Narita airport, there are 171 Gacha machines lined up. Inside the Gacha there are various items related to anime, games and miniture figures and other such goods. If you put your coin in the slot and turn the handle, you can get a little souvenir.

The other day, my daughter and I went to the airport and dropped by this area. I thought I'd do it just once, and tried a Gacha for “Cup no Fuchiko” (or Fujiko on the cup) . There were many poses in which Fuchiko sits on the edge of the cup. “Oh, I'd love a Fuchiko in this pose”, I thought and wanted to do it again. But I'd said to my daughter, “Just one time”, so I had to endure that !

In Narita airport, they introduce them as “Gacha”, but the names vary according to the area and age of people ; some say Gacha Gacha, or Gashapon or they are also called Capsule Toys. What do you call them ?

takane

Hajimemashite, I am Yukiko Takane.
I live in Chiba Prefecture. My hometown is near the ocean and is surrounded by rice fields - its a laid-back place. The sashimi and rice is really good here. My family home makes rice as well, so I usually help out during the harvest season. I may look weak, but actually I can lift a 30kg bag of rice.

In the past, I taught Japanese in Saipan and Cebu islands. The people I got to know there are precious to me. I am really looking forward to meeting you all in the online classrooms. I have been called 'Takani' Sensei or 'Okane' sensei by my students. Well, I am not a 'crab' nor am I 'money' - the name is Takane. Doozo yoroshiku onegaishimasu.

Try to use your newly learned vocabulary and phrases all the time in the lessons. Looking forward to meeting you all in class !
